New work by Peter Koenig
“Situation of America, 1848”
An original sign based off a sign from an artist unknown, 1848. The original was oil on wood; height 34, width 57, depth 1 3/8 inches. This piece depicts the thriving juggernaut of industry that New York City was for the young United States and the world at the time. With the Black Ball Line(the worlds first regular packet service)opening in 1818, and the subsequent opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, New York City quickly became an unmatched majority importer and exporter of goods from across the United States as well as with our European neighbors across the pond. Peter Koenig’s sign is made with mixed media on pine that pays homage to the original, giving it an authentic, weathered and aged look as only Peter Koenig can.
